Choosing the Right Gate Intercom System

A gate intercom is used at either driveway gates or walk up gates and allows two-way communication to between the visitor and property owner or manager.  These intercoms can be either audio only or audio and video. There are several technologies available as shown in the graphic below.

Types of Gate Intercom Systems

Just like other technologies, wireless products are the most popular and for good reason. First there is no need to dig a costly trench for the wire. That can save hundreds if not thousands of dollars in labor and equipment cost. Then you also won’t ever have a line cut by landscaping people or utility companies. Once again that can end up being costly as well.

There are also new benefits that come along with the new technology like video. You can now talk to and see visitors at your gate. And since some systems connect to the Internet or cell phone network, you don’t even need to be home or at your business and you can still receive calls.

If you go wireless, the distance between the gate and the building is less of a concern than it used to be. Long-range 2-way radio intercoms can reach up to a mile. Then there are also wireless gate intercoms with an essentially infinite range. With the cell phone network intercoms all you need is a good cell phone signal at the gate, and you could be on the other side of the world and still talk to visitors.

If you have a Wi-Fi wireless router and you get a good signal at the gate, then you can get the same benefits of the cell phone network intercom, but with a WiFi gate intercom. Even if you don’t have a good signal you may be able to use a Wi-Fi extender to get one at the gate. Then you can use an app on your smartphone to see and talk to people at the gate no matter where you are. You just need a data connection on your smart phone.

If you would rather have a wired system there are new and improved versions of those as well. These VoIP intercoms use IP technology that enable you to use standard networking devices to convert the system to wireless.  Now you can get features like advanced noise cancellation and high-definition audio.

A hybrid wired-wireless system that combines the best of wireless and wired is also available. It has a wire to the gate, but still has Wi-Fi capability in your building so you can use an app on your smartphone in addition to its internal monitor.

So there are lots of options available. You just need to decide how you want to use the system and then look for the system that matches your needs. With the wide variety, you should be able to get exactly what you want.
